The Internet is a-twitter today with the news that David Duke, former Republican member of the Louisiana legislature and former Grand Wizard of the KKK is embarking on a 25 state tour to test the waters for a potential presidential bid.
Duke describes himself as a racial realist, asserting that “all people have a basic human right to preserve their own heritage.” He is a strong advocate of opposition to Zionism as well as what he asserts to be Jewish control of the Federal Reserve Bank, the federal government and the media.
Even if Duke does not run, this news which is certain to flood the Internet bandwidth is sure to give Republicans a black eye. It calls attention to the fact that the Republican party of Louisiana had a former grand wizard of the KKK as a representative in their state legislature. From some of the content in a Huffington Post blog, it looks like the KKK is following the strategy of many Wall Street corporations in their attempts to rebrand themselves.
But least we lose sight here and start thinking that the Democrats are above electing KKK members to Congress, let’s remember Strom Thurmond. He was a member of the KKK and served as a US Senator from 1956 to 2003. If you need any clue in regard to how he felt about the blacks, you can remember that he filibustered against the civil rights act of 1957 for 24 hours and 18 minutes–the longest filibuster by any single Senator.
As always, let us remember: Our nation is an oligarchy, ruled by the plutocratic Party of One.
44% of our current Congress are millionaires, yet only 1% of our population are millionaires.
We do not have a democratic representation of the majority and we won’t until we kick the millionaires out and replace them with citizens who are representative of the majority.”
Is this the hat that Duke will throw into the ring?
More than their “guns and Bibles”, the American people cling to the myth of their political party.
Thus they fail to see that it is the personal wealth of the leadership of BOTH parties as well as the wealth of the majority of Congress that stands in the way of meaningful solutions for the majority of the people in the USA.
There is no hope for the majority of the USA until we remove about 85% of the current Congress and at least the Obama administration if not Obama himself. No hope whatsoever,
And yet, even here on Firedoglake, a bastion of liberal thought, I read blog after blog as well as comments to these blogs that indicate to me that the majority of you cling to the myth of the two party system–that you still believe that it makes a difference if a Democrat or a Republican is in charge. The historical evidence of the past 20 years says that you are wrong, very wrong.
There is no significant difference in outcomes for the American people REGARDLESS which party is in control in Washington DC. Furthermore, if you look at some of the legislation that was signed into law under Bill Cinton, for example, a good case can be made that the Democratic leadership is even harsher than the Republican leadership.
For example, under Bill Clinton and a Democratic Congress, we got NAFTA–an unfair trade agreement that resulted in the loss of over 2 million jobs for Americans by 2000. It did even more harm to Mexico where wages declined 40 to 50% in the first year of NAFTA while the cost of living rose by 80%. MOREThen there was Clinton’s draconian Welfare reform bill that he crafted with Newt Gingrich that put a time limit of 5 years on poverty for parents with dependent children. You have five years as a parent of dependent children to be poor–never mind that the minimum wage voted into law in 2007 after 10 years of nothing is not a living wage. Minimum wage is a worthless crumb tossed to the people by a Democratic Congress. Currently in all major cities of the USA, if a citizen works 40 hours a week at minimum wage, they do not even earn enough (using their entire months salary) to cover the rent for a one-bedroom apartment. And do we have any meaningful discussions of poverty in America on mainstream media or even in the halls of Congress? Hell no.
And finally there was the draconian “bipartisan” Bank Modernization Act of 1999 that undid all the protection that stood between the American citizens and the greedy pigs who run Wall Street. Bill Clinton did not have to sign that bill into law. If he had let it stay on his desk, it would have died with that session. Bill Clinton and the Democratic leadership played an active part in the financial deregulation that is at the heart of our current economic crisis.
As far as privatization is concerned, Clinton outdid any Republican before or since.Over the course of his presidency, he increased federal spending for contracting out from the beginning of his term (1993) by 44 percent. The right-wing Heritage Foundation labeled Clinton’s 1996 budget the “boldest privatization agenda put forth by any president to date.”Now if you are a true Democrat, the last thing you want is approval from the Heritage Foundation. As far as a Democratic majority in Congress–Big deal! We elected a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress in 2006 on a mandate to end the war in Iraq and bring the troops home on or before the end of 2008. What did this Democratic majority do? They continued to rubber stamp George Bush’s requests for unfunded military appropriations AND they even voted to send an additional 100,000 troops over there. Remember the surge? That was thanks to Democratic leadership in Congress–not the Republicans.
John Kerry and James Sensenbrenner have more in common with each other than they do with you or me.
“Oh but John Kerry is a liberal Democrat and James Sensenbrenner is a rabid right-wing conservative!”Yes, that is their corporate sponsored media image. But what is the truth of these two men when it comes to legislation that makes a difference in our lives? NO DEGREE OF SEPARATION! In the summer of 2009 Max Baucus proposed a $4 billion tax on medical-device firms to help offset the cost of health-care reforms. John Kerry and James Sensenbrenner bellowed like two stuck hogs. Why? Because Kerry and Sensenbrenner have something in common that supersedes any party alliance or lack of it: They each have millions of dollars of family wealth invested over the years in the companies that make medical devices.
You want to know why we don’t have a decent healthcare system in the USA? It’s because at least half of Congress have their personal wealth tied up in Wall Street health insurance stock–Democrats and Republicans. For example, Bayh and Lieberman both have wives who are lobbyists for the health care industry AND both couples own over a million dollars each in health car stock. Judd Gregg, a Republican, owned between $100,000 and $250,000 of stock in Bristol-Myers Squibb and on it goes with examples from Congress on both sides of the aisle. But in the fall of 2009 instead of talking about the conflict of interest of these people, we were too busy responding with self-righteous indignation to the ridiculous claims of death panels.
THERE IS A SOLUTION. THERE ARE REAL STEPS TO REAL CHANGE. THE ONLY QUESTION IS: WILL THE MAJORITY TAKE THESE STEPS? Will Americans let go their pet myths regarding their chosen brand of rat poison that they call either Democrat or Republican?
1. Understand that the party leadership of BOTH parties represents the upper 12%–not the majority–not you and not me.
2. Understand that the underlying economic ideology of BOTH parties is the same and is at the heart of our current economic crisis. Until this ideology, which is at the root cause, is replaced–little will change, not only in the USA, but the world. It is the broken economic mythology of Milton Friedman.
3. Stop waiting for the Messiah and become one yourself. Start today!
4. Stop allowing mainsteam media to dictate the topics that are discussed in the blogosphere. Ignore them and lead with topics of substance on issues that do make a difference.
5. Understand that if you own stock in Wall Street that you are part of the problem. Americans who care about America should remove their investments from Wall Street and bring them home to their local communities. How can you criticize the corruption of Wall Street when you profit from it ? You can’t. There is no degree of separation between you and most of the 525 hypocrites in Congress.
This video focuses on the Republicans as the culprit. I hope that the American people wise up soon–long enough before the elections of 2012 to realize that we have been the victims of the Republican/Democrat good cop/bad cop game for 30 years. Watch this, but remember that Democrats are as guilty as the Republicans.
Run for office in 2012 or support your neighbor’s campaign for office. Support Green Party candidates. Support Labor Party candidates. Support Independent candidates. Bernie Sanders is an independent and is the one who is most representative of the majority of the people in all of Congress.
MADISON, Wis | Wed Apr 20, 2011 6:04pm EDT
MADISON, Wis (Reuters) – Wisconsin’s election oversight agency said on Wednesday that the challenger in the close race for a seat on the state Supreme Court has asked for a recount.
The April 5 high court contest was widely seen as a referendum on the state’s new Republican leadership and the curbs they have imposed on public sector collective bargaining, which drew national attention as other states weighed similar moves.
In a statement, the Government Accountability Board said it was “prepared to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for Supreme Court Justice, as requested by the Kloppenburg campaign today.”
The announcement came just minutes before JoAnne Kloppenburg, who trails incumbent David Prosser by just 7,316 of the nearly 1.5 million votes in the closely watched race, was scheduled to hold a press conference in Madison outlining her plans.
Wednesday was the deadline for her to request a recount.
Politico [a right-wing blog] reports that A former Republican congressman is in Libya to persuade Col. Muammar Qadhafi to step down. [Politico is financed by Robert Allbritton, chairman and chief executive of Allbritton Communications, which owns television stations in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, all affiliated with the Disney-owned ABC network. Albritton also owns The National Enquirer.]
Curt Weldon and a small private delegation are due to sit down with Qadhafi on Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Republican writes in a New York Times op-ed. Their goal, he says, is to urge Qadhafi to “step aside.”
QUEEN’S COMMENTS ON THE HISTORY OF MR. WELDON
Well if any U.S. ex-congressman has the credentials to cut deals with world class thugs, it is certainly Mr. Weldon–in fact, it has often been difficult to draw the line between the thugs and Mr. Weldon himself. Certainly the facts attest that Mr. Weldon has profited handsomely from these various liaisons–most of which have gotten him in hot water with the Congressional ethics committee..
Weldon has pinned medals on Qadhafi
Weldon spoke at the coronation of Sun Myung Moon “as humanity’s Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent”, on March 23, 2004. His office originally vehemently denied his attendance, then when he was revealed to be a co-chair of the event claimed that he had intended to attend but could not because of a scheduling conflict; then when a photo surfaced of him speaking at the event while standing next to a lifesize photo of him pinning a Unification Church medal on Moammar Al Qadhafi, stated that he had left immediately after the speech and had no knowledge of what else went on.
WELDON TOOK PERSONAL HANDOUTS FROM BOEING WHEN HE WAS A CONGRESSMAN
Weldon’s son, Andrew, was pursuing a career as a racecar driver. One of his biggest sponsors as of July 2006 was Schaffer Motorsports, owned by Tom Schaffer, a senior employee at the Boeing Company. One of the sponsors of Schaffer Motorsports is Boeing Helicopters Credit Union, whose logo appears on the racecar Andrew Weldon drives. Boeing, in turn, was Rep. Weldon’s top career patron.
Weldon is Accused of being an Influence Peddler
On October 16th, 2006 the FBI raided the homes of Karen Weldon, Rep Weldon’s daughter, and Charles Sexton as part of a raid on six locations, four in the Philadelphia area and two in Jacksonville, Florida, in connection to an investigation into influence peddling by Weldon to aid his lobbyist daughter. A grand jury was impaneled in May of 2006 and has “obtained evidence gathered over at least four months through wiretaps of Washington area cellphone numbers” to determine whether Weldon “received anything of value” for his “support of the Russian-managed Itera International Energy Corp., one of the world’s largest oil and gas firms, while that company paid fees to Solutions North America, the company that Karen Weldon and Sexton operate.
The FBI investigation was not just looking at Weldon’s support for Itera but also investigated Weldon’s aid to other clients of his daughter including two Serbian brothers with close ties to former autocrat Slobodan Milosovic and one other Russian company. The investigation was initially reported by McClatchy Newspapers on October 13th, 2006.
In 1999 Curt Weldon met Dragomir and Bogoljub Karic, Serbian businessmen with close ties to then-dictator Slobodan Milosovic, while traveling with a congressional delegation to Vienna in an attempt to “broker a deal to end the war between Yugoslavia and the province of Kosovo
Support for an Italian Arms Maker
In October 2006, the New York Times reported that Weldon was the principal congressional backer of Finmeccanica, an Italian arms maker.
BUZZFLASH reports that
In a March 31st statement, Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont-I) questioned why the Federal Reserve provided more than $26 billion in credit to an Arab intermediary for the Central Bank of Libya.
The total includes at least $3.2 billion in loans that the Fed was forced to make public today in addition to earlier revelations under a Sanders provision in the Wall Street reform law.
Sanders also asked why the Libyan-owned bank and two of its branches in New York, N.Y., were exempted from sanctions that the United States this month slapped on other Libyan businesses to pressure Col. Moammar Gadhafi’s government. MORE
I’m beginning to think that the strategy of the upper 2% is to saturate the world with their filthy greed and corruption. Thus there will be so many instances of it present at any given time that the rest of us are overwhelmed at the possibility of ever successfully putting an end to it.
But we must not lose heart. There is a starting place for the American voters:
In 2012, if you can avoid it, do not vote for either a Democrat or a Republican/Tea Party candidate. The Democratic Party is controlled by the Wall Street Corporate Centrists. There is little difference between their goals and those of the Republican/Tea Party leadership. Both represent the rich. Yes, it is true that the Democrats throw a few crumbs, while the Republicans give nothing and take all. We need to remember that when we have two bad choices, we need to look for a better choice. Either/or is not a choice, it is a manipulation.
Vote for an Independent (if you know and trust the candidate); vote for a Green Party candidates; or run yourself. It is easier than you think and if you start now, money is NOT an issue. If money was all that was required, California would have a different governor.
BREAKING NEWS: Wisconsin Democrats just announced that local activists submitted over 100% of the signatures needed to “recall” Republican state senator Dan Kapanke from office!
After local officials certify the signatures, a new election will be scheduled for Kapanke’s seat. Today’s news will send shockwaves throughout Wisconsin, and it gives huge momentum to efforts in other Senate districts to gather recall signatures.
Now’s the time to flood the Wisconsin airwaves with more of our TV ads supporting the recall and pump energy into places where volunteers are still working hard to gather signatures
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin labor advocates are preparing for tomorrow’s rally in Madison and shifting their focus to court challenges and recall efforts. Yesterday, the Wisconsin Assembly passed an explosive bill taking away most public workers’ collective bargaining rights. Gov. Scott Walker says he’ll sign the legislation as quickly as possible. [I'll bet he will.]
First of all, I hope that the majority of people who work for a living have learned valuable lessons from this: The rich can do whatever the hell they want to in the USA. They can figure out any kind of a work-around to any law they want to, whether it is murders committed with the permission of leadership of corporations, or passing laws that give away public utilities to multi-billionaire puppeteers such as David Koch.
Although, in this instance, the Democrats did represent the people by leaving the state and allowing time for this issue to be discussed, not only by the people of Wisconsin but also by the USA at large, I hope that the majority will remember that we still have one party–the party of, by and for the rich first. The Democrats are merely the lessor of two evils. They are the valve for letting off steam in order to maintain the status quo and the rule of the rich.
I hope that the leaders of unions have learned enough lessons in the past two years from how they have been mistreated by the Obama administration to permanently and finally turn their backs on the Democratic party and assist in their local communities in raising up Independent candidates to fight against BOTH parties.
And last of all, I hope that ordinary Americans on main street are finally seeing that Democrat Republican/Tea Party are the same thing. I hope that Americans turn away from party AND from the insidious influence of mainstream propaganda. I was once a news junkie who watched all the mainstream media channels. For the past six months, I’ve turn on my television about 10 times. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? I know more about what is REALLY happening in the world that I ever did when I was watching the corporate propaganda.
Stop looking for the truth from corporate owned media. You won’t be finding it there. Fox News, like the Republican leadership is the worst most blatant abuser. However NBC and the other mainstream media channels, like the leadership of the Democratic Party, are almost as bad.
Stop looking for representation of the majority from EITHER party. Both parties play a game of good cop/bad cop to ensure maintenance of the status quo for the rich.
I hope that Unions will help the majority of Americans in supporting and promoting real independent candidates from Main Street who don’t take a dime from any corporate interest or front group for them such as “Americans for Prosperity.”
Americans should thank Scott Walker, the Wisconsin Republican Senators and David Koch because their antics just may have awakened the majority of Americans in time to do something about thugs like them in 2012.
More Hypocrisy from the Rich: Wisconsin State Republicans took hundreds of thousands of dollars in government farm subsidies
Sam Stein from Huffington Post reports this morning that at least three of the Wisconsin state Senate Republicans currently demanding that public workers sacrifice benefits, wages and even collective bargaining rights for the sake of the budget have applied for and received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal farm subsidies, a Huffington Post review of state and federal records shows.
From 1995 through 2009, state Sens. Luther Olsen, Dale Schultz and Sheila Harsdorf all had stakes in farms that received between them more than $300,000 in taxpayer funds.
Those federal appropriations had no direct impact on the state’s current budget woes, but the cash spent on those subsidies, which went to support a range of functions — from soybean production to small hog operations — could have been used elsewhere, perhaps even in Wisconsin. More than that, critics say, it muddles the notion, pushed by these lawmakers and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), that only they are serious about reining in an overextended, overspent government.

QUEEN’S COMMENTS ON THE RICH HYPOCRITES–Don’t get me started!
This is just another example of how the rich think: There are rules for us which they are so willing to dictate and then there are different rules for them. They have the same attitude toward taxes. The rich think that instead of paying taxes that it is fair for them to donate to charity–in amounts THEY determine. For this, people like David Koch who actually donated 1/1000th of his wealth to build a cancer research hospital gets the center named after him and accolades from the community. If he paid taxes according the rates that he should, there would likely be enough money in our tax coffers to build three hospitals.
In regard to Farm subsidies as gifts to the wealthy:
Over the years I have written numerous posts on this topic. At my last count (I think it was for 2009) we are forking over $19 billion a year in farm subsidies. Of this $19 billion, only $350 million goes to assist small farmers who still live on the land that they also farm [the original intent of this legislation 50 years ago].
The other $18.6 BILLION goes to the rich who own land. One study found that many of these “farmers” live in New York City, only a few blocks away from Wall Street. But don’t think that these Republican Wisconsin farmers are an exception to the rich rule of grabbing government handouts. Michele Bachmann, the Tea Party Darling is also among those whose families have benefited to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars from Farm Subsidies. And it’s not a “party thing.” Plenty of multimillionaire Democrats also benefit from government farm subsidy handouts–for example, Rockefeller as you can see in the video clip below.
