Harold Camping as Antihero
Anti-Hero: an antihero is generally considered to be a protagonist whose character is at least in some regards conspicuously contrary to that of the archetypal hero, and is in some instances its antithesis.
I nominate Harold Camping for an antihero award for the following reasons:
Most of us will not even live to be 89, much less create such a national happening.
- He has stimulated the US economy from California to Florida by millions of dollars through sales of merchandise relating to the apocalypse that he has predicted to begin today and end Oct 21, 2011. Harold has likely done more to stimulate the economy in the past few weeks than our Congress has done for the past few months.
- He has stimulated theologians and others of us to ask and consider important questions such as: Is our world in such a horrible shape for so many people that they would actually welcome an apocalypse to end their misery? If so, shouldn’t we be doing something about it?
- He is stimulating many of us to learn more about earthquakes–particularly their frequency of occurrence, and what this might mean in light of the recent Japanese nuclear disaster. The truth is that earthquakes happen with great frequency and all over the world, including all over the USA. Even here in North Texas we have had several in the past 5 years.
- While Harold has no doubt created fear an anxiety in the hearts and minds of many, he has also created smiles and distractions for others. Many will be having apocalypse parties tonight.

If you want to obtain earthquake information, go to the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) or to the U.S. Geological Survey and get an education.
As I mentioned in previous posts, Harold Camping’s prediction will be true today as the USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.
The NEIC now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year.
EARTHQUAKE HISTORY FOR MAY 21 [USA time]
M5.8 INDIA 1997
Jabalpur Earthquake
[Local time: May 22]
At least 38 people killed, more than 1,00 injured, thousands homeless and extensive damage in the Jabapur area.
M6.0 – CHINA 1984
Shanghai-Rudong area
Several people injured jumping from buildings
Felt on about 200 fishing boats on the Yellow Sea
M7.9 Chile 1960
Lebu-Concepcion area
Some deaths. A small tsunami was recorded at Talcahuano, Valparaiso and at other places along the coast of Chile, but caused no damage. This is the largest of 4 foreshocks magnitude 7.2 or greater for the magnitude 9.5 Valdivia earthquake on May 22
M6.0 – Peru 1950
Cuzco and San Sabastian
83 people killed and 200 injured
Remember: The weekend is upon us!
and remember: all the good news, the news that make a different in our lives is released by the owners between 4:30 pm Friday and midnight the next Sunday.
But remember: It does not necessarily have the significance that Harold Camping would like for us to think it does in regard to the earthquake(s) that are to happen tomorrow, May 21, 2011 at 6pm Pacific Time.
Why?
There will be an earthquake somewhere in the world that will happen on May 21. That you can be sure of. The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.
The NEIC now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year.
Harold has provided himself with an out–an extended Rapture
I just read this in the BBC News:
Harold Camping, 89, predicts that Jesus Christ will return to earth on Saturday and true believers will be swept up, or “raptured”, to heaven.
He has used broadcasts and billboards to publicise his ideas.
He says biblical texts indicate that a giant earthquake on Saturday will mark the start of the world’s destruction, and that by 21 October all non-believers will be dead.

QUEEN’S COMMENTS on Harold’s qualifier
He is going to drag it out. Now Harold says that May 21 is only the beginning. The total and final end will come five months later on Oct. 21.
So here is the Queen’s prediction:
There will be an earthquake somewhere in the world that will happen on May 21. That you can be sure of. The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world each year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small magnitudes.
The NEIC now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or about 20,000 a year.
So take your pick, Harold. LOL. And as for the rest of you: Keep on buying all that apocalypse merchandise. Our economy needs all the help it can get.
Harold Camping is a hero: He has done more to stimulate the economy than all of Congress
A TRIBUTE TO HAROLD FOR STIMULATING OUR ECONOMY!
As I was surfing the Internet this morning, I saw all kinds of merchandise being hawked for the world’s end which is supposed to arrive Saturday night a 6pm Pacific Time. There are posters, banners, coffee cups, T shirts, pamphlets etc. for sale. In addition, even the non-believers are hosting parties (thus spending money for food and party supplies). Then it occurred to me! Harold is stimulating our national economy with this end-of-the world story.
THANK YOU HAROLD, FOR DOING MORE THAN YOUR SHARE TO HELP REBUILD AMERICA!
One thing is for certain: You’ve done a lot more for us than the House and Senate combined for the past five months! (Of course, those who have cashed in their retirement funds may not agree with me come Sunday when they are still here.)
Harold Camping from Oakland is the 89 year old man who started the buzz about the end of the world coming Sat. May 21, 2011 at 6 pm Pacific Time. The movement and its related merchandising efforts have spread all the way to Florida. I doubt there is a state in the union where something is not being hawked that is related to this event.
Of course a lot of the apocalypse survivor merchandise on the Internet is related to the December 2012 predictions for the end of the world. Still, Harold is due credit for stimulating this market as well. Seriously I have no doubt that Harold stimulated our economy by several million dollars in the past few weeks.
HERE IS TO YOU HAROLD. THANKS AGAIN for putting some jingle into the pockets of a few Americans.
